Which format should I choose?
JPG is best for photos. Files are small, and almost every app and website accepts them. JPG cannot store transparency.
PNG keeps every pixel exactly and supports transparent backgrounds. Photos saved as PNG are usually much larger.
WebP is a modern format that makes smaller files and supports transparency. Current versions of the major browsers support it, but some older apps and upload forms do not.
Things to know
- Converting to JPG turns transparent areas white.
- Converting from JPG to PNG does not restore lost detail. It only changes the file type.
- Animated GIFs are converted as a single still frame.
